    How the 90/180 rule works

    The rule in one line

On any given day, look back over the last 180 days (including today). The number of days you've spent in the Schengen area in that window must not be more than 90. The window rolls forward every day, so days you spent six months ago "come back" one by one.

    Which days count?

Every calendar day you're in the Schengen area counts, including the day you arrive and the day you leave. A day trip counts as one day. Time spent in non-Schengen countries does not count.

    Which countries are in Schengen?

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City have open borders with it too.

Ireland and Cyprus are in the EU but not in Schengen, so days there don't count.

What about the new EU Entry/Exit System?

The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) now records your entries and exits electronically instead of stamping your passport, and it flags overstays automatically. Its record is the official one, so keep this tracker in line with your actual travel dates.

    Who does this apply to?

UK passport holders and other visa-free non-EU visitors on short stays. It doesn't apply if you hold an EU passport or a residence permit for a Schengen country (such as a Spanish TIE).
